Junior Year Final Project

Level Walkthrough

Platform: PC

Engine: Unreal Engine 4

My work on this project:  This was the final project for my Game Design class in my Junior Year at High Point University

 

Project Length:  2-3 weeks

Team Size:  I worked on this project by myself

Player Experience Goal:  The player experience goal for this project was to create a level that allows for the player to solve puzzles and test their mechanical skills

What worked:  I was able to create puzzles that required both cognitive and mechanical skills with success

What did not work:  I struggled with enemy AI at the end of the level and the interactions between the player and the AI

What I changed and how it improved:  

I changed many things along development, but some of the major ones that improved the feel of the level were changing some of the kill walls/floors to damage walls/floors. They initially all instantly killed the player when made contact with them but I changed it to where most of them now damage the player quickly. This change made it feel more fair and gave the player a chance to recover from a mistake

This is the beginning of the level. The player must first acquire the jump powerup (the arrow). To achieve this, the player must go up the ramp and look through a window where they will show the middle of a target. Once the player picks up the jump powerup, they can then acquire the key which opens the door and the next area of the level

This is the second area of the level. The player must press the button by shooting it. Once the player shoots the button, they can then jump from pillar to pillar in this parkour mechanical test

This is the third area of the level. The player can pick up a health pack if needed before entering this area. In this area, the player will step onto a platform that will then move through a tunnel where the player will have to dodge damaging walls, "Hole in the Wall" style

This is the final area of the level. In this final boss fight with the red cube, the cube will chase down the player and attempt to touch the player. If the cube touches the player, then they will take damage. The player's goal here is to shoot down the cube before getting killed by the cube. Once the cube falls, the level is over
